I am very drawn to mermaids as muses and as 'collage' beings, seeing that they blend together different realms, water, earth and air, human and creature. They have rather a bad reputation in mythology as sirens who lead sailors to their watery graves. I see them rather as embodiments of the primal feminine that wants to pulls us into the depths where our deep subconscious fantasies lie hidden and submerged and hidden....
My mermaid rises from a coral throne, her head about to pierce the water that forms the ceiling to her underwater realm. She is blue like the ocean, her tail bears the vibrant hues of an exotic fish. I feel that images of the fluid underwater realm are a perfect way to convey the grace of fluidity of the feminine energy that wants to be reborn. In our consciousnesses I mean, for in truth it never went away…When this model was painted, her presence was like a blue being, not someone in make up.
